How the Wimbledon Draw Works — Explained Simply

The Wimbledon main draw ceremony follows specific rules that differ subtly from other Grand Slams. Understanding these helps you read the bracket correctly.

01
Seedings mirror ATP/WTA rankings

Since 2021, Wimbledon seedings match the ATP and WTA world rankings exactly. Previously, the AELTC used a modified formula that factored in grass-court history. The ranking cut-off for 2026 is June 22.

02
Seeds 1 and 2 are placed first

Seed No. 1 is placed at the top of the draw (Line 1), Seed No. 2 at the bottom (Line 128). They can only meet in the final — guaranteeing a top-2 match if both advance.

03
Seeds 3 & 4 are drawn into halves

The two middle seeds (3 and 4) are drawn randomly into the top half or bottom half. This is why seeds 1 and 3 sometimes appear in the same half — they are drawn separately, not guaranteed apart.

04
Seeded players cannot meet before R3

The draw guarantees that any two seeded players can only face each other from the third round onward. This prevents early clashes between top-32 seeds.

05
Wildcards are drawn freely

The 8 wildcard recipients (6 given by the AELTC, 2 by the ITF) can be drawn into any section — including against a No. 1 seed in the first round. Emma Raducanu and Maja Chwalińska are among 2026 wildcard candidates.

06
Qualifiers fill the last 16 spots

Qualifying matches at Roehampton (June 22–25) produce 16 qualifiers per draw — 12 men’s and 4 international places. Qualifiers are drawn into numbered slots and shown as “Q” in the bracket until the ceremony.

Wimbledon Qualifying Draw 2026

The Wimbledon qualifying draw runs on the public courts at the Wimbledon Community Sport Centre in Roehampton, SW15 — not at the All England Club itself. Players must win three rounds to earn a spot in the main draw.

Qualifying is free to watch in person. Roehampton courts are open to the public during qualifying week with no ticket required. It’s one of tennis’s best-kept secrets for seeing future stars up close, and the standard is remarkably high — qualifying players often rank inside the top 200.

Frequently Asked Questions — Wimbledon Draw

When is the Wimbledon draw 2026?

The Wimbledon 2026 draw ceremony took place on Friday, June 26, 2026 at 10:00 AM BST. It was streamed live on Wimbledon’s official YouTube channel and at wimbledon.com. The rankings cut-off for seedings was June 22, 2026.

Who is the No. 1 seed in the Wimbledon men’s draw 2026?

Jannik Sinner (Italy) is the men’s No. 1 seed at Wimbledon 2026. He is also the defending champion, having beaten Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 final 4–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–4. Sinner is placed at the top of the draw and can only meet the No. 2 seed (Alexander Zverev) in the final.

Four former Wimbledon champions are in the same draw.

Is Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon 2026 draw?

No. Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from Wimbledon 2026 due to a right wrist injury. This is a significant absence — Alcaraz was the two-time defending champion (2023, 2024) and reached the 2025 final before losing to Sinner. His withdrawal reshuffled the top of the men’s seedings, with Zverev moving to No. 2.
